Things to do in Jockey Hollow

What to bring to the Great Swamp and tour information

There are no regularly scheduled tours offered at the park, but the Friends of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge offer tours by appointment. Call 908-647-2508 for more information. When you do visit, be sure to wear waterproof or old shoes, insect repellant and protective clothing to repel the swamp’s abundant mosquitoes, ticks and deer flies.

  • What is the historical significance of Jockey Hollow?

Jockey Hollow was the winter encampment site for George Washington’s Continental Army troops from October 1779 to June 1780.
  • What caused the Great Swamp’s land to be dedicated as a refuge?

The Port Authority of NJ and NY were planning to build a major regional airport in the area. Many high-profile residents opposed the airport, so they formed an association to prevent it and protect the area as a national wildlife refuge instead.
